If you're looking for a reliable fan control software for your Mac, you may have encountered issues with outdated versions. Fortunately, thanks to the open-sourced code base of FanControl, there are alternative options available that can support newer hardware.

One such option is LibreHardwareMonitor, which I found to be particularly effective in supporting my MSI Z390 Edge AC board and regularly updated. This branch offers a more modern alternative to the original FanControl project, which has not been updated for some time. The first link provides access to the original project, but it's no longer maintained.

In searching for an alternative with similar features, I only found one paid option: Angus Monitor. However, my BIOS only supports CPU temperature as a source for PWM fans, so this option was not viable. Instead, I used LibreHardwareMonitor to bind the speed of my case fans to the hottest component in my PC - my GPU.
